So many wonderful but perplexing decisions and I’m only in line at Starbucks! It’s the season for heavenly holiday coffee drinks here in Starbucks land. What shall we have? This might help you make an educated decision:
Caramel Brulée Latte
Espresso and steamed milk flavoured with caramel Brulée sauce, topped with sweetened whipped cream and caramel Brulée topping. This drink is a tall, 2% milk with whipped cream. Oh it’s ok it can’t be that bad..what?? 340 calories, 11gs of fat (6 of those are saturated!) 52g Carbs and 9g Protein.
Espresso with steamed milk and gingerbread flavored syrup. Topped with sweetened whipped cream and nutmeg. Again this is a tall, 2% milk with whipped cream, it’s Christmas after all…they will not always be around! Gahhhh 260 calories, 11g fat (6g of artery clogging saturated fats) 30g of Carbs and 9g Protein.
Espresso, steamed milk, mocha sauce and peppermint flavored syrup, topped with sweetened whipped cream and dark chocolate curls. Tall, 2% milk with whipped cream. Oh nothing says Christmas Cheer like a little Peppermint and chocolate!!! I have to have this…bleck! 320 calories, 13g fat (7 grams of stroke inducing fat) 48g Carbs (simple but highly processed sugars) and 10g Protein.
Seriously!!! All I wanted was a coffee with a little holiday pep. What can we do to make these makes treats a little more of a true treat?
One of the easiest ways to improve upon the calorie/fat issue is to switch the milk and cancel the whip! Just by asking for a non-fat milk you can trim the Peppermint Mocha down to 220 calories and the fat from 13g to 2g. The carbs sadly will not change. To rectify this you should ask for a “skinny” version but please keep in mind that the skinny versions are not made of natural sweeteners. But now your Skinny, Nonfat, No Whip, Christmas Peppermint Mocha is now a more satisfying 100 calories, 1 g fat, 13g carbs and 10g protein.
Make the same changes to the other drinks and you get
a drink with 100 calories, 1g fat, 13g carbs and 9g protein. Make it “half sweet and skinny” and you can cut the carbs even more!
